edit: another question as I think about rearranging my room while trying to fall asleep before getting up for work in five hours. Is it possible to get a 68" long dresser through a 59" entry into a 2' deep, 70" wide closet?
The math doesn't seem to want to say yes, even if the dresser is an inch thick.

I have a cheap 8 year old CRT tv. All of the sudden it shut itself off, now when I power it back on it doesn't display green correctly, it's only at half intensity. Has something like this happened to anyone else here, is there anything I can do on the cheap to fix it? It's not worth spending a lot of money repairing or replacing it as is.

Awkward question for those more used to social niceties and these things.

If you go to a party and there's someone you only met once before, but had sex with (and it was good for all involved, including the audience), how are you supposed to act towards them? Does carnal knowledge ~= familiarity, or are they still basically a stranger or what?

There's no fear of coming off as all "Oh, now we are a couple! I shall attach myself to you, be jealous of anyone else near you and think we need to do it again!", as it was like a month ago, but with there being few guests that I know, chances are I might find myself wanting to make conversation.

I don't have any real advice, but I can say that I've totally been there, and even being used to social niceties it's still massively awkward.

You should definitely treat them better than a stranger, though how much better may be a delicate dance - I'd be conservative, start with 'acquaintance' and see how they respond. If they reject your presumed familiarity for whatever reason, you should respect that, but understand that's them being rude, not you.

For something different, why haven't we decided that different parts of the world using different systems for things like temperature, measurements etc is fucking stupid?

If I read a d&d book for example that talks about fahrenheit I don't want to look up how much degrees C it actually is so we have a clue what it is talking about. Though we all by now know how much meters 5 feet actually is.

The only people who use the Imperial System is the US. Everyone else uses the Metric System. But the US is a bunch of dicks who don't like to change.

Because Germany failed in the last crusade to spread the 24 hour clock and the metric system.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

The metric system was invented in France.

Oddly enough the US military loves the 24 hour clock.

France oddly enough failed to force even France into the Metric time and calender system. The 10 hour day was a total failure.

And the French Republic Calendar
A decimal calendar contains either ten days per week, a multiple of ten days in a month, or ten months per year. Examples that have been adopted are the calendar of Romulus, the Egyptian calendar, the Alexandrian calendar, the Coptic calendar, the Ethiopian calendar, and the French Republican Calendar.

The French Republican Calendar, which was introduced along with decimal time in 1793, was a modern version of the Egyptian/Alexandrian calendar. It consisted of a 12-month year, with each month consisting of three 10-day weeks, called décades, plus five or six sansculottides days at the end of the year. It was utilized as the official calendar of France for a period of twelve years, but was abolished by Napoleon on January 1, 1806.

The UK also refuses to use metric, because "IMPERIAL IS WHAT MADE ENGLAND GREAT! HOW DARE BRUSSELS GO TELLING US TO CHANGE TO A FRENCH SYSTEM! OH, ENGLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND! *FAP FAP FAP*"

The reality being they can't be arsed learning something new.

I haven't been in England since 1991, but back then they sold gas petrol by the liter and Coca-Cola in 335 ml cans. When I asked brits if such cans were actually smaller than the American 12 fl. oz soda can, none of them had a bloody clue.

This actually seemed weirder than the American system where imperial units get the big print but damn near everything (notable exception: posted speed limits) is listed in both if you read the fine-print.
"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

Remember that the last time the English were forced to adapt French ways it was a sharp stick to the eye for the poor monarch. Oh those poor people, they actually think they all speak the "English" language.

Anyone know who in Germany would respond to reports of an explosion and gunfire? I imagine the local law enforcement would initially, to secure area or some such, but beyond that? Is there a German FBI equivalent? Who would the Polizei call when they went into an old castle and found brand new nazi paraphenalia hung up around a pile of ashes and bones?

I remember being in London around 2004 and seeing the price for gas at 0.99 ... of couse that was pounds per liter but it "looked" like a nice number even though it was way way more than gas in the US at the time (and even now).

Well, Pint just sounds better than .47 litres.

They tried to put up speed limit signs in kilometers in a few places. People shot the signs down.

But at least we measured the bullets in millimeters.

Nope, we don't. We sometimes call heights in feet and inches, but that's not really something anyone of my age category engages in often (I'm 24). Otherwise, it's all metric, all the way.
